PRP Treatments NYC

Platelet rich plasma
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has been used for decades in orthopedics and dentistry to stimulate healing properties and growth factors in joints, soft-tissues, tendons and ligaments. More recently, PRP has been shown to enhance skin rejuvenation (particularly after skincare treatments that use lasers or microneedling). Moreover, multiple dermatology studies have demonstrated that PRP can also stimulate the activity of hair follicles to grow new hair.

The process involves taking a small amount of your own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red and white blood cells. The platelets are often referred to as “liquid gold” because they are rich in bioactive proteins and growth factors that help promote tissue repair. These concentrated platelets from your own body are applied directly to the skin or injected directly to the scalp (in the case of hair loss patients).

PRP For Hair Loss

In 2006, multiple dermatology studies confirmed that PRP can stimulate the activity of hair follicles to grow new hair. In fact, Dr. Sadick helped pioneer the use of PRP to treat hair loss. He was even invited on the hit show, The Doctors, to discuss the treatment:

PRP For Skin Volume - A Natural Alternative To Fillers

As previously mentioned, PRP can be used on the skin to stimulate healing after cosmetic dermatology procedures. What’s more, PRP has been shown to promote the body’s own natural production of collagen; helping the skin appear more full and youthful. This can be done by directly injecting PRP into the soft tissue where there is volume loss, or applying topically to a scar or before/after laser or microneedling treatment.

Injecting PRP into soft tissue is a great option for those with minimal volume loss and are not candidates for traditional dermal fillers. PRP injections into soft tissue works by delivering the growth factor platelets directly into areas of volume loss, resulting in collagen stimulation. With any injection, there is always a chance of bruising and mild swelling. If bruising is a concern, avoid alcohol 24-48 hours before the treatment and other blood thinners such as Advil, Aleve, and Asprin, unless prescribed by your doctor.

PRP For Skin Rejuvenation

PRP can be added to any laser or microneedling treatment to help expedite healing, decrease the appearance of scars and promote collagen production.

Microneedling: The Platelet Rich Plasma is placed directly on the skin, pre and post the microneedling procedure. One of our favorite treatments to combine with PRP is our “Intensif” treatment, which is radiofrequency microneedling. The tiny needles push the PRP into the tissue and also create tiny channels for the PRP to be absorbed into the skin post-procedure. Patients will generally leave with a mask of PRP and a moisturizer. Most patients benefit from 3 treatments, spaced one month apart, but those with deeper acne scars may require 5 monthly treatments.

Laser: PRP is popularly used in conjunction with laser treatments such as Fraxel and/or Clear and Brilliant, post procedure. Adding these growth factor healing properties immediately after any laser treatment will not only stimulate collagen, but also decrease downtime by a few days. Fraxel is recommended in a series of three monthly treatments. Clear and Brilliant, often referred to as a “baby fraxel” may require 5 monthly treatments but has virtually no downtime.

There are two main components that are found in your blood: plasma and red blood cells. Plasma is composed of both white blood cells and platelets, and platelets are known for being rich in growth factors. Growth factors are tiny proteins that work to accelerate wound-healing and trigger the skin cells to function.

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a new treatment that has been gaining worldwide popularity in recent years for its incredible efficacy and numerous treatment applications—from healing orthopedic injuries to combating visible signs of aging in the skin. Today, PRP is a medically and scientifically-back option for treating and reversing the effects of androgenic alopecia.

PRP for hair loss is a minimally-invasive injectable procedure in which a small amount of your blood is extracted, processed and injected directly into the areas of concern on your scalp. These injections help to stimulate the hair follicles and promote new hair growth by increasing the blood supply to the hair follicles. Over several months, the PRP will begin to take effect by increasing the total hair count, hair thickness and the longevity of the growth phase of the hair growth cycle.

While anyone experiencing symptoms of hair loss can be a candidate for PRP injections, patients with FPB generally see the best results from this treatment. Those who are in the early stages of hair loss tend to have a better response to PRP, as it is easier to re-stimulate the hair follicles before the condition progresses further. During your initial consultation, board-certified dermatologist and internationally-recognized hair expert Dr. Sadick will identify the underlying cause of your hair loss to determine whether you will benefit from PRP injections.

At Sadick Dermatology, PRP therapy is often just a single part of a multifaceted hair restoration program, which can include topical medications, supplements, low-level light therapy or even hair transplantation depending on your needs. In addition to helping women with hair loss, we also specialize in male hair restoration for men struggling with MPB. Take a look at our Male Hair Restoration page to learn more.

PRP therapy is a minimally-invasive and straightforward procedure that is completed in three easy steps. First, a small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm to be used for the injections. In the second step, the blood sample is put into a machine known as a centrifuge, which rapidly spins the blood to separate the plasma from the red blood cells and additional blood components. Next, the separated PRP is administered directly into the affected hair follicles.

These injections are generally well-tolerated by patients, but a topical numbing cream may be applied if you are concerned about discomfort. Depending on the extent of your hair loss, the process can be completed in as little as 30 minutes. Since PRP therapy uses your blood, there are very few risks or side effects associated with this therapy, and no downtime is required after your procedure.

For the most optimal results, it is usually recommended that patients receive PRP injections once a month for the first three to four months of their treatment, and then once every four to six months after that depending on your response to the therapy. Women who follow a regular treatment regimen will likely start seeing results within two to three months of their initial injections. Most women will first observe a decrease in hair shedding, followed by early signs of hair regrowth and longer hair length after about six months of therapy. Receiving PRP injections on a long-term basis will provide lasting results of longer, thicker and fuller hair.
