NYC Best Hair Restoration For Women

Oftentimes when you think of receding hairlines and thinning hair, men are the first thing that comes to mind. However, according to the American Hair Loss Association, women make up a staggering 40 percent of all hair loss patients. Androgenic alopecia, known as female pattern baldness (FPB) is a progressive hereditary condition that causes hair loss in women over time.

As with male pattern baldness (MPB), FPB also causes the hair follicles to shrink, resulting in thinner and finer hair growth. Eventually these follicles will stop growing hair altogether, creating a distinct pattern in women that is classified by a widening part at the top of their scalp, as well as an overall loss of hair thickness. Similar to men, women with FPB will typically start to experience hair thinning or loss in midlife, though in some cases it can begin much earlier.

FPB is the most common cause of hair loss in women and can have extremely detrimental effects on a woman’s self-image and quality of life. But even as prevalent as this condition is, many are still not aware of the highly-effective hair restoration treatment options that are available to them today. At Sadick Dermatology we offer comprehensive hair restoration treatment plans for women designed to restore a full, thick head of hair and improve your quality of life. One promising new facet of these plans is platelet-rich plasma therapy.

What Causes Hair Loss In Women?

Most people don’t realize that women can have hair loss based on genetics, just like male pattern baldness. This condition, also known as female pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia, is passed down through genes. So if one (or both) of your parents has hair loss, you’re more likely to have it too. Thanks, Mom and Dad!

So why does this happen? Women with androgenetic alopecia have hair follicles that are more sensitive to a hormone called DHT. This hormone miniturizes the hair follicles, eventually leading to hair loss. Sometimes this hair loss occurs all over the head. In this case, you might notice a wider part or a smaller ponytail than usual. Other women with androgenetic alopecia lose their hair at the temples and crown.

Women with androgenetic alopecia often blame themselves for the condition, and seek to thicken their hair through volumizing hair products (which only mask the problem) and hair extensions (which can actually worsen hair loss). But it’s not your fault! We can’t control our genes. We can, however, seek treatment for hair loss (more on that later) to restore our hair and our confidence. Androgenetic alopecia isn’t the only form of hair loss that can affect women. Women may also experience hair loss due to inflammatory conditions, illness, nutrition, and other abnormalities.

Our Hair Loss Treatments For Women

Nutritional Supplements

We believe in taking an external and internal approach to women’s hair restoration, so we recommend nutritional supplements to many of our patients.

These supplements are loaded with hair-healthy vitamins and minerals offer support for your follicles to grow healthier, stronger, fuller hair. Plus, they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can help to reverse some forms of hair loss.

Low Level Light Therapy

Low-level light therapy, also known as LLLT, uses red or near-infrared light to trigger tissue repair and encourage cellular activity.

When used on the scalp, LLLT via our Omnilux system stimulates hair follicles to enter the growth phase of the hair cycle. Translation? Your hair starts growing again! LLLT is clinically proven, minimally invasive, and completely painless.

Platelet Rich Plasma

PRP is an injectable treatment that uses plasma from your own blood to promote growth and healing. Hair restoration is just one of the many uses for this amazing treatment.

During PRP, we draw a small amount of blood, then use a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the rest of the blood material. The plasma is then injected directly into the scalp. Don’t worry, we numb the area first!

After several weeks, new hair begins to grow at the injection sites as the plasma’s growth factors stimulate the hair follicles to grow new hair. We recommend repeating PRP treatments every three to six months for optimal results.

Hair Transplantation

Believe it or not, at Sadick Dermatology, hair transplants for women are as common, if not more common, than hair transplants for men. A hair transplant harvests hair follicles from one area of the scalp and transplants them into an area where hair is sparse. Once these follicles take root, they grow new hair strands and restore hair density in the area.

When treating women with hair loss, we always use the FUE (follicular unit extraction) transplantation method. This precise technique transplants individual follicles. There’s no scar, so it’s easier to hide the harvesting sites. The results are full and completely natural-looking.

Custom Topical Solutions & Prescription Medications

You’ve probably heard of popular, over-the-counter topical medications for hair loss like Rogaine. Contrary to popular belief, these topical medications can also be used to treat hair loss in women. We offer customized topical solutions based on your diagnosis, including formulas that help to reduce irritation and inflammation associated with some forms of hair loss. Additionally, we can treat hair loss with some oral medications.
