Laser Hair Removal

For both men and women, the management of unwanted or excessive body hair is perhaps the biggest nuisance of their daily grooming ritual. Shaving, waxing and tweezing are not only tedious and temporary solutions for unsightly hair growth, but they are also expensive, time-consuming and often painful. Most women prefer the smooth look and feel of a soft, hairless body, but are fed up with the constant upkeep and maintenance required to feel confident in their skin—especially during swimsuit season. Men have to contend with unpleasant hair on the back, neck, arms, and hands.

Laser hair reduction, or laser hair removal, is one of the top requested minimally-invasive cosmetic treatments in the U.S. that works to permanently reduce unwanted hair from virtually any area of the body. Unlike traditional hair removal methods, laser hair removal is a gentle procedure with minimal discomfort, zero downtime and incredibly long-lasting results. If you are ready to throw out your razors for good, laser hair removal could be the solution you’ve been waiting for.

Who Can Benefit From Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair reduction works its magic by targeting the melanin found within each strand of your hair. Melanin is the pigment found in both your hair and your skin that gives them their color. The more melanin you have in your skin or your hair, the darker it will be. For this reason, the candidates who will experience the best results from laser hair removal are those who are light-skinned and have dark, coarse hair, as this contrast makes it easy for the laser to detect and treat only the melanin in the hair follicle and not the skin.

Those with blonde, red or gray body hair are more difficult to treat, as there is less melanin in these pigments for the laser to detect. Patients with darker complexions also face similar concerns, as the melanin present in both their skin and hair does not provide sufficient contrast for the laser to differentiate between the two. Fortunately, as laser technology continues to advance and evolve, many dermatologists today utilize lasers with longer wavelengths for their dark-skinned patients. These wavelengths work to bypass the melanin in the skin and target only the melanin in the hair, so you can safely reap the benefits of laser hair removal regardless of your hair and skin tone combination.

What to Expect From Your Treatment

When you arrive for your laser hair treatment at Sadick Dermatology, your treatment area will be cleaned and prepped, and a topical numbing cream may be applied for your comfort depending on the size and location of the area being treated. Both you and your doctor will put on protective eyewear to filter out any harmful light during your procedure. The total length of your treatment will vary depending on the size of the area of concern. Smaller treatment areas such as the chin or upper lip may only take a few minutes to complete, whereas larger areas such as the legs can take an hour or more.

During your procedure, your doctor will hold the skin of the treatment area taut, and use the handheld laser device to deliver concentrated light pulses directly into the hair follicles. Many patients equate the feeling of these pulses to warm pinpricks, or the sensation of a rubber band being snapped against the skin, however, the treatment is generally comfortable and well-tolerated. The melanin in the hair will absorb the thermal light energy, in turn vaporizing the hair so that it will not return.

Since hair grows at different rates, multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed to ensure all the hair in a chosen area is treated. The hair growth cycle on average lasts for about a month and consists of a growth phase, a resting phase and a fall-out phase. To ensure that each hair is treated during its growth phase, a series of four to six treatments spaced about a month apart will be required to achieve ideal results. During your initial consultation, Dr. Sadick will help you to determine how many treatment sessions you will need based on your hair color, skin color and area of concern.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Safe for all skin types and tones, laser hair removal at Sadick Dermatology is most commonly used to eliminate unwanted hair from the following areas:

  • Face and neck
  • Underarms
  • Legs
  • Bikini Area
  • Upper and lower back

What to Expect From Your Recovery

There is no downtime needed for recovery after your laser hair removal appointment. While treated skin may appear mildly red or swollen immediately following your procedure, patients can quickly resume their normal daily activities as soon as they leave our office. It is essential, however, to take extra care of your treated skin and avoid direct sunlight, as areas treated will be more susceptible to sun damage and skin discoloration than usual. Dr. Sadick will provide you with thorough aftercare instructions to ensure you get the best possible results from your treatment session.

How Long Will My Results Last?

You will likely start to see a reduction in your hair growth in as little as one treatment session, though it will take about 10 to 14 days for the treated hair to fall out. Most patients can expect to experience a 10 to 25 percent reduction in body hair from each treatment session. The success of your treatments can vary based on a variety of factors, such as the thickness of your hair, your treatment area, the laser utilized and the color of your skin; however, most patients can achieve permanent hair removal between four and six treatments, with hair regrowth appearing lighter, less coarse and more sparse after each appointment.

Once you have completed your hair removal treatments, it is likely you will not see any hair regrowth in your treated areas for several months or even years. While the results of your laser hair removal are considered to be permanent, a majority of patients will enjoy an 80 to 90 percent reduction in hair growth and may require annual maintenance treatments to eliminate any stray hairs that were missed. Overall, your treated skin will be smoother, softer and stubble-free for good, sparing you from the time, expense and pain that accompanies traditional hair removal methods.

If unwanted facial or body hair is causing you embarrassment or discomfort, laser hair removal can effectively diminish the amount of hair in your treatment areas for silkier, smoother skin that lasts for years.
